Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 341, reports as
follows:
Communication No. 341, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated June 15, 2017, nominates
Mr. Alex Akau of Council District 1 to the Hawai`i County Cultural Resources Commission.
Ms. Rose Bautista, Executive Assistant to Mayor Kim, introduced Mr. Akau who appeared in the
Hilo Chambers. Mr. Akau was born and raised on Hawai`i Island and is an active member of the
Waimea community where he currently lives.
Two motions were made and approved with eight ayes to correct errors in Communication
No. 341, respectively, as follows: Mr. Akau's residence Council District was changed from
Council District 9 to Council District 1, and the term ending date from December 21, 2021 to
December 31, 2021.
Several Council Members commented in favor of Mr. Akau. The vote was then taken with eight
Council Members voting"aye." Chair Eoff stated that Mr. Akau did not need to appear at the
Council meeting on July 18, 2017, for confirmation of his appointment.
Pursuant to Article 44, Section 2-226 of the Hawai`i County Code, the Hawai`i County Cultural
Resources Commission shall consist of nine members, and shall be appointed by the Mayor and
approved by the Council.

Your Committee on Planning is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication
No. 341, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Alex Akau to the Hawai`i County
Cultural Resources Commission.
