Re: Agreement with University of Hawaii
Enclosed is a resolution to enter an agreement with the Office of Research Services,
University of Hawai`i to provide $25,000 to fund their AgVenture program. This
program seeks to address the issue of agricultural awareness and career opportunities by
supplementing fourth grade classes with events which focus on agricultural careers and
entrepreneurial opportunities.

A. REQUEST:
Resolution authorizing County (via R & D) to enter into agreement with Office of Research Services,
University of Hawaii, to provide funding for its AgVenture program.
B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
Pursuant to Hawaii Revised Statutes § 46-7, the County may enter into agreements with "any public body"
with the consent of Council. R & D is requesting that Council approve a resolution authorizing R & D to enter
into an agreement with Office of Research Services, University of Hawaii, a public body, for the purposes of
funding its AgVenture program pursuant to HCC 2-139(3)(c).
The AgVenture program seeks to address the issue of agricultural awareness and career opportunities by
supplementing 4th grade classes with events that focuses on agricultural careers and entrepereneurial
opportunities. The program exposes these students to the range of opportunities that are available in
agriculture and its corollary businesses, both with established companies and in creating start-up businesses
in agricultural production, processing, distribution, and marketing. The $25,000 program Will hold at least
three of the events at various venues around Hawaii Island.
Mission of 4-H: 4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnerhsip with caring
adults.
Vision of 4-H: A world in which youth and adults learn, grow and work together as catalysts for positive change.
The term of the contract will end on June 30, 2018.
