Report Of ;The
COMMITTEE ON PLANNING -
DATE : November 13 , 1984
TIME: 91:30 a.m.
PLACE : County Councilroom
Chairman and Members
Hawaii County Council
Hilo, Hawaii
Your Committee on Planning to which was referred Resolution No. 987
encouraging the National Association of Counties (NACo ) to continue
its support for sugar assistance provisions, reports as follows :
The purpose of this resolution is to urge NACo to continue its
support for sugar assistance provisions by including NACo ' s sugar
position in its 1985 American County Platform.
Sugar is a major segment of Hawaii ' s agricultural industry, which
provides approximately 26 ,000 jobs for Hawaii ' s people. However , due
to the influx of foreign sugar on the world market, Hawaii ' s sugar
companies have suffered severe income losses . The demise of the
State' s sugar industry will be devastating to the State' s economy.
The United States Congress passed the Agriculture and Food Act of
1981 which provided price stability and loan assistance provisions
for sugar producers . The renewal of these provisions in the
Agriculture and Food Act of 1985 is crucial to the future of Hawaii ' s
sugar industry.
Your Committee on Planning concurs with Resolution No. 987 and
recommends its approval .
