Sugar is a major segment of Hawaii ' s agricultural industry, which provides approximately 26 ,000 jobs for Hawaii ' s people. However , due to the influx of foreign sugar on the world market, Hawaii ' s sugar companies have suffered severe income losses . The demise of the State' s sugar industry will be devastating to the State' s economy. The United States Congress passed the Agriculture and Food Act of 1981 which provided price stability and loan assistance provisions for sugar producers . The renewal of these provisions in the Agriculture and Food Act of 1985 is crucial to the future of Hawaii ' s sugar industry. Your Committee on Planning concurs with Resolution No. 987 and recommends its approval . jucete" TAKASHI MINGO, CHA f'MAN SPENCER K.ARSPN SCHUT TTS, VICE CHR. JAS L. K.
