HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0107.162 2016-2018 Aloha honored Council members, I am writing this letter to express my favor for the foam container ban under consideration by the County Council. As a longtime business owner of Volcano Garden Arts in Volcano, I would like to say that I am for protecting our fragile environment by enacting common sense practices. Why must the Big Island be second in our state to think of the future? Plastic waste already pollutes much of our oceans, breaking down extremely slowly, and kills countless wildlife every year. Enacting such a measure would only add minimal additional business costs - well worth keeping our land and oceans clean and free of unsightly garbage. As a tourist-driven economy, Hawaii must guard its oceans, beaches, and land in order to protect our tourism industry as a whole. People come to Hawaii to enjoy beautiful, clean beaches, not ones covered in plastic foam debris everywhere. Simple policy changes such as banning plastic disposable containers will go a long way to not only help our environment, but also reduce garbage cleanup costs, and ensure Hawaii's continual draw of tourists from around the world. There will always be a few backward thinking council people who will never understand that this bill, like the one on Maui, will protect our future. I hope that you take my concerns into consideration by voting Yes to ban foam containers in the County of Hawaii this session. car c :.
