Dear Chairwoman Poindexter and Council Members:
It is my pleasure to nominate Michael Hughes to the Hawai'i County Tax Board of
Review. Mr. Hughes, a businessman, currently owns and operates Hawaiian Tropicals
Direct, LLC, Smart Direct, LLC., Hawai'i Horticulture Product, LLC, Tradewind
Connection, LLC, H3 Importing, LLC, and Smart Direct, Ltd.
Originally from Michigan, Mr. Hughes has lived in Hawai'i for approximately 5 years and
owns a home in Kapoho. He holds a BS Degree in Business Agriculture with a minor in
Horticulture from Ferris State University in Michigan.
Mr. Hughes is an active member of several community organizations including, boardmember of
the Hawai'i Export Nursery Association (HENA), member of Hawai'i Floral and Nursery
Association (HFNA), former vice-president of the Orchid Growers of Hawaii, and former
president of the Vacationland Hawai'i Community Association.
Mr. Hughes states he is not affiliated with any political party. He inadvertently wrote
"yes" as having membership to a political party in his application form. If confirmed, he
will serve a term ending December 31, 2021.
