This morning before filing the letter, I noticed it had a color xerox stapled to it. Therefore, I am faxing over the color xerox which may need to be attached. Sorry! Curtis Tyler,lll: r Recently the leader of our community told me that the people of Hawaii are not interested in homeownership. This is reflected in the fact that for the past several years most of the Federal housing funds that come into the County of Hawaii have been earmarked for Section Eight rental assistance. Meanwhile there are people like Malakai Valungua who are being asked to leave their land because they donR have a permit to live there. Malakai is a hard working mason who is the Sunday school minister for the Tongan church in Hilo and Kona. Every Sunday he makes a trip around the island to minister to the children of his people. Yet Malakai and his family live in two shacks that make living conditions in developing countries look goad. This man and his family live in conditions that are worse than those of the shantytowns of Johannesburg, Tijuana, and Bangladesh. This man and his famiy live in America, in Hawaii, in your county. At Habitat for Humanity we believe that decent shelter is a matter of conscience and action. Furthermore we believe that poverty housing and homelessness are socialry, politically, and religiously unacceptable in our world; our nation, our back yard. We are a volunteer organization that costs the taxpayers noshing to try to help sohre these issues. However, there are people in this county, that have a vested irrterest in insuring that rental assistance have priority over home ownership, and that economic support be steered towards that All I ask is that you allow us to help solve this problem. I would like to take this letter as an opportunity to speak to you more about this, either person to person or to via the legislative sessions. Recently the number of cases concerning housing that have come to the Legal Aid Society have increased drastically. The fallout from a deteriorating inadequate housing policy for this county is beginning. The problem will only get worse in time. If you the elected leaders Of our community d0 not take action and break the chain of this policy then you are allowing it to continue. I ask you to think about this during this legislative session. I ask you to think of Malakai and his family and the perhaps hundreds of families like his that are living in deplorable conditions here in Hawaii. Thank you four yo/ur time. c~ / Anthony d.
