Testimony re Bill No. 61—Shiro Takata Field 8-11-17
I have known Shiro Takata for many years. In all that time I have found that he has always had the best
interest of the Kohala Community, and especially the youth of Kohala in mind. Shiro founded the Kohala
Community Athletic Association thirty-seven years ago. This program provides after-school sports programs
for all Kohala keiki ages five-to fourteen. Currently there are seven such programs, providing at least one
available sport year round.
He has always had an active interest in this program. He still serves on its Board. He recruited me ten years
ago to head up the day-to-day activities of K.C.A.A. He constantly seeks ways to improve the program. He has
formulated "Coaching the Kohala Way" guidelines (see kcaa.online) where new volunteer coaches learn
positive coaching. More than sixty coaches participate every year.
Also his efforts with the Kohala Coalition Against Drugs, he is always trying to improve the Kohala Community.
I wholeheartedly support naming the field after him.
