Please ask these questions:
1. If we were designing a power generation and distribution system from scratch, how would it look?
2. How much power will be customer-generated in 20 years?
3. How will we pay for modernization of the grid?As customers go off-grid,there are fewer people to
pay fora new grid.

8. How will security and privacy for the grid and individual customers be ensured?
9. Can a customer refuse a smart meter?
10. If Hawai'i Island does an energy co-op like Kauai, would the smart grid still be needed?
11. Re. Hu Honua:
• How many years will it take before customers see savings from Hu Honua?
• The Tribune-Herald reports HELCO would buy at least 10 megawatts from Hu Honua, but
that Hu Honua is contracted to produce up to 21.5 megawatts, and could produce 30
megawatts. Will the 10 megawatts be cost-effective for Hu Honua?
O How much will HELCO pay Hu Honua per kilowatt hour—vs.much HELCO pays for other
alternative energy sources?
• What steps are still needed (construction, agreements, permits) before Hu Honua is
ready to deliver power?
12. Will HELCO purchase Hamakua Energy Partners?
