Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 388, reports as follows:
Communication No. 388, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim dated July 27, 2017, nominates
Michael Hughes to the Hawai`i County Tax Board of Review.
Ms. Rose Bautista, Executive Assistant to Mayor Kim, introduced Nominee Hughes. Mr. Hughes is a
businessman, who currently owns and operates Hawaiian Tropicals Direct, LLC, Smart Direct, LLC,
Hawai`i Horticulture Product, LLC, Tradewind Connection, LKC, H3 Importing, LLC and Smart Direct,
Ltd. If confirmed,he will serve to fill a term expiring December 31, 2021.
Mr. Hughes stated that it would be an honor to serve on the Tax Board of Review. Council Members
expressed support of Mr. Hughes's appointment to the commission.
Chair David informed Mr. Hughes that he did not need to appear at the Council meeting on
September 7, 2017, for confirmation of his appointment.
Pursuant toSection 19-96 of the Hawai`i CountyCode, there shall be a Tax Board of Review, which
shall consist of nine members appointed by the mayor with the approval of the Council.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication 388, and
recommends confirmation of the appointment of Michael Hughes to the Hawai`i County Tax Board of
Review.
