Subject: Presentation of. the Coastal Erosion Management Plan
(COEMAP) Before the Hawaii County Council, Planning
Committee
i have provided a brief discussion of purpose for COEMAP and also,
what we plan on presenting to the Council.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources (ULNR) developed
CoEMAP to increase public/agency awareness of the problem and
consequences of coastal erosion and beach loss in Hawaii. The Plan
provides a discussion of some po]icy and technics] recommendations
that could he utilized by all stakeholders including shoreowners,
regulatory and planing agencies and others to improve how coastal
erosion is addressed. While the overall goal of the plan is to
protect and enriance beaches throughout the State, this cannot be
accomplished without viable implementing tools, such as beach
nourishment, coasts] ].ands acquisition, and information on coastal
process and erosion hazards, to help policy-makers, regulators and
shoreowners.
We would like to present COEMAP to the County Council, Planning
Committee. 'the presenters would include Sam Lemmo of tl~e DLNR and
Ur. Chip Fletcher of U.H., Manoa. Visual aides would include
slides.
Please let me know if and when we would be on the agenda.
