Subject: Community Input on Public Shooting Range
Aloha Council Members,
As a long standing community member here on the East side of the Big Island, I am providing my input on the
matter of a public shooting range. As with any great community, Hilo is a very diverse place with people's of
varying interest. I enjoy many of Hilo's public recreational spaces, and am thankful that our County has taken
the initiative to develop them on behalf of the community with the community's involvement. On a few
occasions, I have enjoyed the use of the shotgun range, despite not being an avid hunter or shooter in
general. However, while at the range, I noticed that for most of the people there, it was a place of great purpose
of regular enjoyment. In addition, I know several people who find great enjoyment in going to the range or
talking about the many engineering marvels of different firearms.
As such, I am fully in support of our County providing a public facility for recreational and competitive
shooting. I know with certainty that not providing such a range does result in a significant amount of shooting
going on at non-designated ranges and in conditions that are less safe for the activity. Providing a public range
would almost certainly reduce this unsafe and inappropriate activity,while providing a constructive place for
our diverse community to enjoy a unique activity.
