Dear Mr. Yagong,
l understand that this morning the Public Works Committee will be considering the future of
Punalu`u. Among the ideas being discussed is the paving of the road on the beach.
I have made many visits to Punalu`u and have a deep appreciation for the beauty of the
natural surroundings and the presence of the turtles. I have also watched as bus Toads of
tourists azrived at the beach and behaved in ways destructive of the environment, such as
gathering black sand to take away as a souvenir, and disruptive of the turtles, such as
approaching too closely to a basking turtle. The tour operators showed complete indifference
to these behaviors.
Rather than paving pazadise to make it more accessible to people having little or no respect
for what is here, I would prefer enhancing the naturalness of the limited areas still free from
human development. I urge you to oppose any paving of the road on this beach or any other
activity that will lessen the tranquility and threaten the future of this gem.
