Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Bill 525 , reports
as follows:
Bill 525 proposes to amend Ordinance 87-58 , the Operating Budget for
Fiscal Year 1987-88 , by increasing revenues in General Fund Account
No . 3501.07 , Drug Enforcement, by $4 ,275 , and appropriating same to
Account No . 010-201-5218 . 41-115, Drug Enforcement .
Your Committee on -Finance is aware that these funds are derived from
restitution payments from individuals who were involved in illegal
drug activities . Your committee is further aware that these monies
are to be used specifically by the police in its drug enforcement
program.
In reply to a question as to whether there was an existing drug
education program in our schools, the Chief of Police explained that
there is an ongoing program in our public schools. He further
responded that the funds received from the courts could be used for
educational purposes .
Your committee expressed the concern that funds should not only be
used for drug enforcement but in drug education programs in which
prevention of the problem is stressed.
Your committee would like to see the question pursued as to what
funds are available to be put into educational programs.
