Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution
No. 316-87, reports as follows:
The purpose of Resolution No . 316-87 is to show support for
Senator Spark Matsunaga 's attempts to provide Hawaii 's veterans with
health care and in the process , restore the dignity to them that
they rightfully deserve .
Senator Matsunaga recently held a hearing in Honolulu as Acting
Chairman of the U. S. Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. As a
result of. the hearing, it was found that Hawaii ' s veterans are not
getting adequate health care .
The Senator has stated, "the Veterans Administration has taken
unfair advantage of the patience and good nature of Hawaii 's
veterans beyond any sense of reasonableness" .
Senator Matsunaga cites ten specific significant points of concern
which surfaced during the hearing . Some of them are :
1 . Making it easier for "outer island" veterans to be treated in
Honolulu .
2 . Establishment of a Hawaii Veterans Health Care Task Force to
address improved health care services .
3 . Reinstatement of a veterans advocacy officer at Tripler Army
Medical Center .
4 . Providing specific dollar amounts to travel funds available to
the Honolulu Outpatient Clinic and the Honolulu Vet Center to
help neighbor island veterans .
5 . Appointment of a native Hawaiian as a member of the VA's Advisory
Committee on Native American Affairs .
