Aloha,
I would like to voice my support for the pest removal proposed in this bill near the honokohau harbor site.
I am a wildlife biologist who has worked with a number of endangered species of birds and I have seen first
hand how feral cat and weasel populations can devastate an endangered bird community. I do not take this issue
lightly and am always saddened when an animal has to be taken to the humane society for possible euthanasia
but I believe it is in the best interest for the many unique bird species on our island. These birds are struggling
to survive the many threats posed to them by no fault of their own and many have already gone extinct which is
incredibly saddening. On the flip side, cats are not an endangered species and are also not native to our islands
so although it is a difficult choice I feel it is in the best interest of the aina to remove these threats to our local
bird populations.
Furthermore, feral cat feeding sites also propagate the spread of diseases such as toxoplasmosis which is a threat
to fragile marine species such as our endangered monk seal. This threat is further heightened by the fact that
many of these feeding sites are directly adjacent to the water where the disease can spread more easily.
I hope you will take this into consideration when making your decision. We need to take action as soon as
possible to preserve the very special species of animals that live and breed no where else in the world.
