Chairman Committee on
Public Works and Parks
Hawaii County Council

RE: COMM 1407
Dear Chairman Yagong:
We are in receipt of a faxed transmittal dated January l5, 1997
regarding Hilo Woman's Club Pink Elephant Thrift shop's request for
a sidewalk use permit. The sidewalk use permit requested is for the
purpose of allowing a 24" X 30 "sandwich board sign in front of their
shop at 216 Kamehameha Avenue.
As chairpersons of the Downtown Improvement Association's Design
Committee, our first concern is that the sign meets the County's rules
and regulations. In addition we are concerned that the placement of
the sign does not affect pedestrian safety. We are also concerned
that the approval of this sidewalk use permit will result in the
proliferation of sandwich boards, thus compromising the safety of
pedestrians.
