Aloha Council Members,
Some of us remember the days when takeout was in paper based containers.
As I have spoken with old timers that are still with us,they explained they never used clam
shell type or styrofoam containers.
One auntie spoke of how families would bring their bowl and utensils to the church potlucks)
Another spoke of how banana leaves were used as plates.
Understandably life is alot faster and busier now, or so it seems.
Folks might have more $$$ than time and would rather get take out than bring home lunch.
Sometimes its just nice to grab a bite with a friend and go down Liliuokalani or other
destination to enjoy the view and one another.(Sad how styrofoam and other rubbish are stuck
between the rocks and floating in the ocean.)
For those of you considering voting no to Bill 13 please consider your ancestors and how they
cared for our Island for you to enjoy.
Please consider the price paid by our keiki in future years as they are left with containers you
are considering permitting.
Please consider our already taxed ocean ecosystem and shoreline.
Imagine as part of your accountability to your constituents,being required to store all
the styrofoam containers used for one week in your district, in your bathroom and kitchen for
the rest of your life, if you vote no for Bill 13, how would YOU vote? (would it all fit in your
bathroom?)
Now consider that when you pass on that your children and grandchildren and great great gran
children would inherit the styrofoam and would be required to store it in their homes. The
message attached to the inheritance would be that You wanted them to have it.
Those who can afford "take out" can surely afford to pay a few cents more for a non
styro container, especially biodegradable containers.
It has become fashionable over the past couple decades for council members to voice
their love of the aina(shoreline) and keiki.
A YES vote will be very fashionable.You will be fashioning a healthy, viable, Island kine
environment for now and future generations.
Hawaii County CAN be pioneers in implementing policies that are consistent with Hawaii
2050 sustainability plan.
