Aloha Hawaii County Leaders,
It's with great pleasure and anticipation that I write to you today to urge your support of Bill 13. •
I have been participating in beach cleanups for many years and we always find polystyrene ("foam"). So I am now
FAR more concerned with solving the problem, not just cleaning the mess! There simply is no need for this material
in our lives. I hope you will lead the community of Hawaii to a much cleaner and with healthy future.
You may hear some excuses against this. However there are hundreds of foam free restaurants in Hawaii.The
Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawaii program has certified over 140 restaurants,all of which are voluntarily foam
free,and most of them being small, locally owned businesses. None of these restaurants have reported financial
burden from going foam-free. Additionally, like all education,when something is learned,it cannot be unlearned.
The individuals involved in these projects will never use foam if they have a choice.Additionally they will seek new
ways to develop more sustainable habits in their lives and those they care about(including customers)-uch as
CHOOSING not to use single use plastic bags,and wasteful plastic utensils. The world is well past the time where
we NEED wise choices and truly malama honua.
