I am wholeheartedly for this ban and here's why- *As litter, polystyrene doesn't decompose so any food container that doesn't go into the landfill, must be picked up. If you look around the west side, you'll see that, even with volunteers like me,we are not keeping up with litter. It's an eyesore and bad for tourism.I've attached the photo from the announcement of this meeting that says it all. It's from the Kailua Bay Pier and encapsulates my experience as a volunteer litter abatement person(I've just never taken a snapshot of it). *The excuse that other options are a burden isn't valid. There are places on the west side that have voluntarily switched to using paper products for their to go foods and are somehow not having to close their business as a result. Let these businesses be leaders in helping other businesses to move forward instead of making excuses. On a personal note I'd like to add that eating from polystyrene, especially hot foods, isn't as healthy. *Polystyrene isn't recycled here which means that it goes into the landfill. We already don't have enough room for our landfill and, until polystyrene is fully recycled, these food containers are taking up unnecessary space. And, again, they are putting plastic into our food and water cycles that just just doesn't need to be there. Any reduction is a good thing. You,as a decision maker, know that there are many aspects of modern living that are difficult to align with what needs to be done to make our lives healthier and safer. We can't afford to ignore easy solutions like this one.
