Please do not pass this resolution.
It does appear to be a convenient resolution since Cyanotech Corp. is
tackling the issue with this contract,however their means of protecting
the bird habitat does not necessarily make it the correct approach. It
is not a humane approach. Hawaii is about the Aloha spirit,does that
only apply to human beings,not other species. Why do we always have
to take the easiest approach by kiting some species to save another.
Phase 1 involves a trap that is not humane and offers a very cruel and
painful death.I question if these traps are legal in the United
States. What is to keep other species besides mongooses out of the
traps,such as birds and small cats.
Phase 11 involves catching the feral cats and taking them to the Humane
Society who already has too many cats and will be forced to euthanize
them. I realize the feral cats problem is a big continuing one but
please remember this problem was caused by us.We do not take
responsibility for our pets which leads to overpopulation. Catching
and killing the feral cats does not solve the problem,just delays it
till more cats are born.
Phase 111 to shoot and kill cattle egrets. So we're killing one species
of bird to protect another.
From the articles I have read on this topic,it appears the birds are
currently thriving in the area and fledglings are surviving. So
obviously it is not a desperate situation for such drastic measures.
