Aloha I'm Nawahine Kahoopii from the ahupua'a of Pu'ukapu.
I Oppose Hawaii County Council Resolution 250-17
Killing doesn't work; if it did, we wouldn't be here having this discussion. rri

We must move from a culture of killing to a culture of compassion, that is the foundaticklaro to is
presence, ha the life force. We recognize the presence of keakua, the life force in all Ming
• Advocats just received an accommodation from the mayor for their outstanding work doing
TNRM. An alternative to the archaic model of killing as a way to control the population.
• Aloha animal advocates along with Animals balance just did a successful TRNM mash clinic in
July S/N 700 cats in 5 days.
• Similar clinics are done almost every week somewhere on our moku working to get our pet
population to a sustainable level.
• In June we presented you with a strategic plan to bring our pet population to a sustainable
level using human, life-saving methods. This plan has been reviewed by experts in the field of
life-saving sustainable pet management models, including the international organization:
Animal Balance, No kill Advocacy Center, Alley Cat Allies, and Kaua'i SPCA to name a few.
We are actively working that plan. I assumed from the positive tone of that meeting and the
agreement we all came too, that we were on the same page.
To use the analogy of the wa'a we have to all be paddling in the same direction to arrive at our .
agreed upon destination using the most efficient methods available. In this instance, I'm referring to
the fulfillment of the strategic plan.
When these kinds of destructive remedies are embraced as the solution, it's like paddling the wa'a in
the wrong direction when you do this you are undermining our strategic plan. Please don't work
against us.
Now the plan is to kill three species:
Mongoose, Egrets, and Cats. When will the killing stop? The methods of killing are: crushing them to
death in traps, shooting them in their sleep and killing them by lethal injection by shipping them off to
the human society. -
Not only that, you've agreed to kill one species of bird to save another species?
What is really behind this sudden killing spree currently sweeping the state of Hawai'i?
Killing doesn't work; if it did, we wouldn't be here having this discussion.
The contractors themselves state the rare birds are currently thriving in the area even without this
additional predator control, so it is questionable why there is a need to kill additional animals.
In closing from the brilliant mind of Albert Einstein: the definition of insanity is doing something over
and over again and expecting a different result.
