Box 4425 Hilo, Hawaii 96720 The Success Factory (TSF), a grass roots group of Hawaii Island STEM professionals, business and community leaders, and students, knows that our children's success depends on what we can create on our island. We believe that our efforts to expand student vision of their potential and develop their creativity through STEM learning will boost student success in school, their chosen careers and livelihood. We begin with our youth with hopes of a long-term positive impact on island economy. We are introducing our programs under the name of NexTech. Initially, they will be in East Hawaii for all island students with our primary objective of advancing interest and achievement in STEM learning.A series of programs have been determined to meet the needs of a wide range of students and to provide a progressive path for students interested in STEM. Here are our plans for the 2017-2018 year. NexTech 3-Day Camp • Select a cohort of 20 high school(grade 9-11)students with high STEM skills and STEM interest • Recruit under-served students with minimal access to STEM learning. Reach girls who are under- represented in STEM careers to test their skills and interest. • Provide design thinking learning through national park issues to solve • Guide team building through group challenges in principles of flight, robotics and leadership. • Engage 20-25 community and business volunteers in camp management and STEM professionals as mentors in one-on-one career readiness conversations. • Introduce and build student interest in the NexTech Student-Community Partnerships program. NexTech One-Day Workshop • Reach students in grades 4—8,enroll 40 pairs of a student and a parent or guardian • Recruit under-served students with minimal access to STEM learning • Reach girls who are under-represented in STEM careers to test their skills and interest. • 40 pairs of a student and a parent or guardian , • Challenge student/parent pairs with hands-on building and/or coding robotic project • Help students experience the excitement of project based learning and discovery of their own talents. NexTech Mentorship Program • Select 3 collegiate STEM majors into the teaching aching environment of Dale Olive and Eric Hagiwara. • Mentorship designed to build advance student skills and confidence to complete their STEM degrees and student teachers to be effective STEM educators. • UHH credit for mentees is anticipated. NexTech Student-Community Partnerships • Offer high school students real communitychallenges. Students will vie for community sponsors and explore and solve real needs of business and community organizations on Hawaii Island. • Provide 10-week long project based learning programs will encourage business and entrepreneurial thinking, require the design thinking process, build collaborative skills, increase student awareness of island challenges and resources,and require professional communication and delivery of project findings and solutions. Our value to STEM learning will be delivering exceptional teachers to more students from grades 4-- 11 and collegiate STEM majors and student teachers through NexTech coordinated programs. Inspiration: Outstanding inspiration and talent is found in Waiakea High School's mathematics teacher, Eric Hagiwara and physics teacher, Dale Olive. For over 14 years,their award winning afterschool robotics teams have dominated in all-college fields of competition.NexTech took its first steps in 2014 to understand and identify the elements of their success.The extraordinary STEM learning,competitive wins and student advancement to college are the rewards of student-centered teaching where these teachers serve as facilitators who "guide from the side"and recognize that the journey of inquiry is as important as the destination.This teaching team has extraordinary ability to excite,engage,challenge, mentor and coach their students.Their students learn to do the same as mentors in outreach programs for elementary and middle school students. Delivering this quality of science learning is the incentive a wider population of student can find in these NexTech's workshops and mentoring programs. Challenging and Relevant Content: Delivering challenging and relevant content in all workshops for 2017-2018 will feature curriculum based on Project Based Learning(PBL). Faced with authentic problems to solve,students engage in design thinking with appropriate inquiry to understand the real-world challenge and work in collaborative groups. The key strategies are to build relationship before relevance and rigor, make project goal and intermediate goals achievable and challenging,celebrate each step towards the overall goal, promote failure as a pathway towards success,convert lessons into competitions,focus on each student's personal growth,and have fun. Success is not only measured in finding a solution;success is also in appropriate inquiry to correctly define and confirm the problem and delivery solutions that meet real need. Evaluation: We are taking several approaches to maximize our reach of students in Hawaii County and to create a progressive path for students to take from grade 4 and beyond.Success of our progressive series will require careful attention to all participants and their personal progress. Detailed applications will provide baseline data on student STEM experience and our tracking of the underrepresented girls and underserved students we intend to support. Evaluations by all participants will contribute greatly to measuring the student experience during the training and for future improvements. Students returning for more workshops and their advancement to more challenging programs will be strong proof of our ability to meet our primary goal to build student skills in STEM learning and their ability to thrive in STEM careers. Financial Viability and Partnerships: In addition to grants pursued,our exemption from Federal income tax under 501(c)(3)allows funding to be tax-deductible contributions from businesses, other foundations and individuals sponsoring"scholarships" and providing generous donations. Capacity: Inspiring more students toward successful STEM careers, improving teacher effectiveness and creating programs for students and business to collaborate on island issues are objectives NexTech and the exceptional team of Eric Hagiwara and Dale Olive share. We also see inviting other talented educators and building programs to expand their student audience a natural advancement. Developing successful models for effective STEM teaching would be ideal.
