Your Committee on Economic Development, to which was referred
Resolution No. 212-86 regarding the establishment of a federal drug
office on the Big Island, reports as follows:
The purpose of this resolution is to urge Congress to support a
144 ,000 appropriation for the establishment of a U. S. Drug
Enforcement Administration office within the County of Hawaii .
There is an increasing problem of marijuana cultivation occurring
throughout the State of Hawaii , especially on the Big Island. In a
1985 statewide drug sweep effort, 80 percent of the State ' s total
marijuana seizures were from the Big Island .
Your Committee believes the establishment of a full-time federal
drug office on the Big Island would provide a deterrence to the
illegal cultivation of marijuana.
Your Committee on Economic Development concurs with
Resolution No . 212-86 and recommends its adoption.
