Your Committee on Economic Development to which was referred
'/Resolution No . 270-87, reports as follows .
The purpose of Resolution 270 -87 is to support Senate Bill 1228
before the Fourteenth Legislature , which initiates the relocation of
the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture from Manoa
Campus to the Hilo Campus .
Transferring the College of Tropical Agriculture to Hilo is logical
since the County of Hawaii has the most lands devoted to and
available for diversified agriculture . Students will be able to
conduct field research under actual conditions which is important to
the success of agro-business endeavors.
Dr . Edward Kormondy, Chancellor , University of Hawaii at Hilo
presented testimony to clarify his position which appeared in the
Hawaii Tribune Herald that transferring the entire College of
Tropical Agriculture is not feasible at this time . However , he
strongly supports the transfer of the undergraduate program of the
College of Tropical Agriculture to the Hilo Campus .
Dennis Yamamoto, Director , Department of Research and Development
also spoke in favor of this resolution.
Your Committee on Economic Development is in accord with the purpose
of Resolution No. 270-87 and recommends its adoption by the County
Council .
