your Committee on Economic Development to which was referred
Resolution No . 310-87 , reports as follows:
The purpose of this resolution is to support legislation which the
United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee has approved
authorizing $250 ,000 in foreign aid funds to promote International
Space Year activities in Third World nations .
Hawaii could be established as the center to train developing
nations to use space technology. Information from remote sensing
satellites can be used to combat drought and famine, and
communications satellites can be used to improve literacy. The
approval of this legislation is conceived as a first step toward
establishing an international remote sensing and communications
institute in Hawaii .
Your Committee on Economic Development concurs with Resolution No .
310-87 and recommends its adoption by the County Council .
