Your Committee on Economic Development to which was referred
Resolution No. 323-87 , reports as follows:
The purpose of this resolution is to support the development of an
astronomy/science museum in Kamuela, Hawaii .
Your Committee agrees that Hawaii County has emerged into a vital
astronomical center . The development of an astronomy/science museum
would complement the world 's largest telescope atop Mauna Kea as
well as serve as an educational center for tourists, children and
residents of the Big Island.
Councilman Dahlberg proposed amendments to this resolution by
broadening its content . Draft 2 recognizes that Hawaii County will
soon become the center of ground based Astrophysical Research with
the deployment of the world 's largest telescope. With this stature ,
the County will attract visitors interested in viewing the premier
instruments . A proposal to create a science center in Kamuela,
which will be called "Waimea Science Center : Project 2000" , could
accommodate these visitors . The proposed facility will contain
exhibits displaying the on-going research and activities of the
Mauna Kea Observatories , including interactive exhibits and
laboratory demonstration facilities . The Science Center is also
proposed to include a complete planetarium with a Digistar Computer
generated planetarium projection system.
Your Committee on Economic Development concurs with Resolution
No . 323-87 , Draft 2 , and recommends its adoption by the County
Council .
