your Committee on Economic Development, to which was referred
Communication 1438, transmitting Acting Director of Research and
Development Minoru Shintani ' s major goals for Fiscal Year 1987-88,
reports as follows:
Communication 1438 outlines Mr . Shintani ' s goals in the areas of
1) enterprize zone, 2) foreign trade zone, 3) sugar industry
assistance, 4) Hawaii Visitors. Bureau - Big Island Japan Promotion,
5) Japan Hawaii Travel Association Fam Tour, and 6) Miss Teen of
America National Pageant.
Councilman Russell Kokubun questioned Mr . Shintani regarding the
Department 's plans in the areas of irradiation, space port and
geothermal. Mr . Shintani stated that activities in these areas will
be coordinated with the Mayor .
Your Committee concurs with the major goals of the Department of
Research and Development and recommends their approval .
