Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Bill No . 598 ,
reports as follows :
Bill 598 amends Section 25-114 , Article 3 , Chapter 25 of the
Hawaii County Code by deleting the proposed Ponahawai Street
extension through Mooheau Park between Kamehameha Avenue and the
Hilo Bayfront Highway .
The Hawaii Redevelopment Agency (HRA) is also requesting that the
Downtown Hilo Redevelopment Plan be amended by deleting the proposed
Ponahawai Street extension as described above .
The HRA states that "The commissioners have found this action to be
in the public interest and in the furtherance of the purpose of
redevelopment . The amendment will retain Mo ' oheau Park as a public
recreation area and permit the restoration of the historic bandstand. "
Your Committee on Planning concurs with the intent and purpose of
Bill 598 and recommends that it pass first reading. Your Committee
also recommends approval of HRA' s proposed amendments to its Downtown
Hilo Redevelopment Plan.
