COMMITTEE ON PLANNING DATE: February 24, 1987 PLACE: Councilroom TIME: 1: 30 p.m. Chairman and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution 'No. 265-87 , regarding the 65-foot tall cross at Bordelon Field , Camp Smith, Oahu, reports as follows : The purpose of the resolution is to support the position of the Kona Post of the American Legion and six other American Legion Posts that the cross should be allowed to remain in Camp Smith because it represents a nonsectarian memorial to all military personnel who died in Vietnam. The American Civil Liberties Union has claimed that the cross should be removed because it represents a specific religious belief , thus making its presence in Camp Smith unconstitutional .
