Re: Request Approval for Discussion During the November 14, 2017
Committee Day Schedule Regarding Battalion Chief Pay Grade
We respectfully request time for a short discussion on the appropriate committee agenda on the
November 14, 2017, Committee day to discuss changing the pay grade for the rank of Battalion
Chief from EM-3 to EM-5.
During the course of the Departmental Review for the 2017-2018 budget, I asked Fire Chief Rosario
for his views on this matter and he indicated that he was in favor of changing the pay grade for this
rank. However, subsequent to that, I had a discussion with former Human Resources Director
Sharon Toriano who indicated her office's opposition to such change.
It is my belief that the current arrangement hampers recruitment for the position and consequently
affects public safety. Therefore, I am requesting a discussion on this matter. Upon approval of this
request, we will be requesting that the Fire Chief,the Director of Human Resources and the Director
of Finance participate in the meeting. I anticipate that this discussion should take approximately 30
minutes.
