COUNTY OF HAWAII -�� '''= �•�- STATE OF HAWAII <br /> . �rE oF•N---: <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 420 1 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO <br /> ASSIST WITH EXPENSES RELATED TO A RESEARCH PROJECT ON RAT <br /> LUNGWORM DISEASE. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works for the <br /> benefit of Puna, the agricultural district that has been most affected by rat lungworm disease in <br /> Hawai`i County; and <br /> WHEREAS, rat lungworm disease is caused by a parasitic roundworm that is transmitted <br /> to humans and some animals through interactions with host slugs, snails, and rats; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's <br /> Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) and with Susan Jarvi, Ph.D., a <br /> professor at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawai`i Hilo, to <br /> research and identify safe and effective food-handling practices to reduce the risk of spreading <br /> rat lungworm disease; and <br /> WHEREAS,pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports innovative research <br /> projects to increase agricultural and food self-sustainability in Hawai`i County; and <br /> WHEREAS, funds will be provided to Malama 0 Puna to assist the USDA-APHIS and <br /> Susan Jarvi, Ph.D., with research costs including laboratory services, supplies, and rats; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 3 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna to assist with costs related to a <br /> research project on rat lungworm disease. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby <br /> transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
