Dear Chairwoman Poindexter and Council Members:
It is my pleasure to nominate Michael Hughes to the Hawai'i County Liquor
Commission. Mr. Hughes is a businessman who currently owns several business
enterprises. Mr. Hughes states he is interested in the Liquor Commission as he wants
to assist "in forming a safe and productive community".
Originally from Michigan, Mr. Hughes has lived in Hawai'i for approximately 5 years. He
holds a BS Degree in Business Agriculture from Ferris State University in Michigan.
Mr. Hughes is an active member of several community organizations including
Vacationland Hawai'i Community Association, Hawai'i Export Nursery Association,
Hawai'i Floral and Nursery Association, and the Orchid Growers of Hawaii. Earlier this
year, he was confirmed to be a member of the Hawai'i County Tax Board of Review.
Mr. Hughes states he is not affiliated with any political party. If confirmed, he will serve
a term ending December 31 , 2021.
Due to the needs of the committee to which this nomination seeks to fill, I respectfully
request that this item be waived to full Council. Should you have any questions, please

requested.

RE: Communication No. 644 : Nomination of Michael Hughes to the Liquor Commission
Pursuant to Section 2(g) of Rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure of the Council of the County of
Hawai`i, this written request is submitted with my approval that the above-referenced matter be
waived from the Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit to the full Council for immediate
action. In reviewing this matter, timely approval is crucial. It is therefore advantageous that
approval is granted and the matter be placed onto the next Council agenda for review. However,
in the event this request is denied, for whatever reason, I understand the matter shall be referred
to the Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit for placement on its future agenda.
