County Council Representatives June 1, 1999
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
To our County Council Representative:
It has come to mytour attention that Mayor Yamashiro has advised the Board of
)rectors of the East Hawaii Cultural Council that he is entertaining plans that
i.vould preclude the renewal of the lease that that they currently hold on the Old
?office Station building when it terminates on December 31, 2000.
Over the years the Cultural Center building has hosted up to 15,000 visitors per
;/ear to the galleries and workshops housed therein, in addition to providing a
inme for the Hilo Community Players and the Big Island Dance Council and their
individual events.
Uwe strongly object to the displacement of this organization. As our Council
Representative, please give serious consideration to the contribution this
srganization has made to the community. They have completely renovated and
lade use of a building that was once slated for destruction and provided_a home
,r the arts in our town.
' ersonal Testimony:

the East Hawaii Cultural Center since my arrival in Hilo in
H86.

'r.d have fostered Big Island artists by providing them with a
.-cility to showcase their works. •
'e Center has also offered outside cultural programs that give
I I all a broader prospect ofthe world developments in theatre
i art that we might otherwise be unaware of.
facility is an important part of our community, our Island
our State and its location is important to the furtherance
its mission.
