Subject: YES ON BILL No.99 Please
Aloha to all!
Please except my letter of testimony respectfully requesting to honor a great man Lala Epenesa. I ask kindly in
behalf of my family to VOTE YES ON BILL No. 99.
LaLa Epenessa was one of the most proudest members of the Honokaa community. His dedication to our town
and the surrounding towns went beyond his job. After his daily work hours we're done, he continued on to the
field, or the court, or to some facility where he was probably going to help a friend, family member, or
community group. Either with coaching, assistant coaching, cooking or even just counseling one of our youth in
the parking lot. I swear this guy never slept. He put many others first before himself,that's probably what led to
his health problems. I have many many stories of how I watched this man work throughout our community in
all aspects. He was well respected because he gave respect. I even saw at times that he would still help some
who disrespected him in the past. Many times (especially in sporting events)he was opinionated but remained
diplomatic because he knew the outcome would be better for everyone. For a man who spent most of his own
life winning, in defeat as a mentor he also taught our kids to be humble in loss. He treated all the youth that he
spent time with as if they were his own. I myself have four children, and each one of them were mentored by
"uncle La".
If you ever asked him to do something he always said "CAN". It didn't always feel like a direct answer,
however as long as he said that word you knew he was going to help you somehow accomplish your task.
It kills me not to be there in person to show the emotion that I have regarding this good man. I just pray that this
statement gets read and is helpful to open the hearts and minds of the council that makes the final decision.
In closing I would like to share something that was brought to our attention at his celebration of life. Lala
Epenessa was part Samoan. Epenessa in Samoan means Ebenezer. In biblical terms Ebenezer means "The Stone
of help", and in Samoan Lala means " To gather ". What better name to give a place where this man helped
gather many youth, and was a stepping stone of help for them. Again I humbly ask in behalf of my family and
I'm sure many many others, to help us name the lower Honokaa softball field after a deserving community
contributor. Please VOTE YES ON BILL No. 99.
