Over the years the Cultural Center building has hosted up to 15,000 visitors per year to the galleries and workshops housed therein; in addition to providing a home for the Hilo Community Players and the Big Island Dance Council and their individual events. I/we strongly object to the displacement of this organization. As our Council Representative, please give serious consideration to the contribution this organization has made to the community. They have completely renovated and made use of a building that was once slated for destruction and provided a home for the arts in our town. Personal Testimony: ~ / ~Sl ~ Location does not make a house a home. The heart of EHCC resides in a beautiful, historic building that has become its home. Transplanting a heart against its will is unwise. Cultural differences aside, it is widely understood that harmony and good-will are created and sustained by your surroundings. The energy and love poured into that old building can never be rerlaced ar_d will be lost if displaced. Yes, they could start over again somewhere else. But why? Why lose the memories, the history, the beauty that has been created from love, from sweat and tears, from art?. A work of art uses its surrounding space as part of the composition. What work of art was ever created that did not take this into consideration? The EHCC is a work of art itself. Look at it, really look at it. It is beautiful, it is timeless, it is art. Do not destroy this work of art by removing its heart. Sincerely, _ a~-- Judy Spain-/ Keaau,BHI 96749 No. • ~u FSIe No. ~/N Ref. To: E Ref. Date ~ ]l 1~
