Dear County Council,
I urge you to vote "No" regarding an increase in the GET tax. This tax increase would hurt the poor people on the
island because Hawaii taxes food and medical services. Sometimes, the tax on medical services is currently more
than 40% of a person's co -payment if they have insurance through their work and have a non -HMO plan. The GET
is passed along to consumers on all goods and services that they may need.
I also am appalled at the huge raises granted by the Salary Commission without giving sufficient notice to the public
to weigh in on it: 39% raise for the Corporation Counsel, 35% raise to the prosecuting attorney, 25% raise to the
mayor, and 32.8- 34.6% raises to the County Council. In the private sector, a business would not give out
unconscionable raises when there isn't sufficient income to justify it. Perhaps the mayor and the county council
members should decline their raises this year.
Sincerely,
Darlene Ashley Fagan, Ph.D.
