Our Island is probably the Island with the highest unemployment rates, lowest wages and many people living under the poverty level. Havinga any GET increase would Severely affect a large number of residents. A tax increase affects All people, regardless of economic situation. • If the GET is increased it is very Restrictive on what the funds can be used for. I agree with Councilwoman Ruggles. The best way to raise funds would be to tax those who can most afford it. Increase in property taxes should be considered for hotels and resorts, second homes and businesses as possible revenue sources . A number of people on this Island have a a lot of wealth. We should be taxing those people who can afford it. In addition, visitors already are willing to pay high room rates in Hawaii. If hotels and resorts need to raise room rates for property tax increases, I would believe this would cause no decrease in tourism. From my understanding, it appears that most Council member also Do Not Support Bill 102 to raise the GET on Hawaii Island. Please DO NOT Support Bill 102.
