Aloha Members of the Hawai'i County Council,
That am writing in strong SUPPORT of Bill 102 Draft 2, which would establish a one-half percent (0.5%) general excise
and use tax surcharge to be used for funding the operating and capital costs of public transportation options within the
County of Hawai'i.
If passed, this bill would generate revenue to fund projects to support active transportation options, such as safe walking
and biking routes and other improvements to our island's infrastructure that would diversify transportation options.
Investing in our transit and alternative transportation options will provide our residents and future generations the
opportunity to live in a healthful and active community.
The County of Hawai'i has consistently led the way in creating healthful communities in the state of Hawai'i.. If more
residents are able to safely walk or bike, or take the bus, then fewer cars will be on the road, reducing traffic, road
congestion, carbon emissions, and improving air quality around schools and in our neighborhoods. Walking and bike -
friendly routes encourage our keiki to view active transportation as a normal part of daily life, and promotes more engaging
experiences for tourists.
I respectfully ask that the Council pass Bill 102, Draft 2 as an important investment in the future of individual and public
health in Hawai'i County.
Mahalo nui for your consideration.
