But if we do this at all, there is much to consider. County officials may develop a bias, perhaps unconscious, towards past donors and potential donors to keep the money coming in. Certainly some people will perceive them as biased. If we do this, we should avoid advertising plastered all over our buses and parks. Recognition should be more low-key—like a plaque on a bench or in a building, or a press release. The criteria for an appropriate proposal should be further spelled out. We should keep the stipulation that Council vote on each sponsorship. But we should evaluate whether dealing with this sponsorship program will take up too much Council time. There should be a ceiling on amounts per donor, per year, so one person can't "buy" the County. Sponsorship is a slippery slope, so we should proceed with great caution perhaps staring with limited donation amounts, limited recognition, and a sunset date on the sponsorship program. comm Nm I p.1 Rett.
