HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0765.035 2016-2018I would like to express my support for Roster Bill #112. I run a commercial nursery in Orchidland Estates. Rooster farms impact my business financially because they attract rats, flies, ants and other insect pests that need to be controlled as part of my nursery certification requirements. Rats can cause thousands of dollars in damage and destroy whole crops in a single night. Insect explosions also damage and visually destroy my plants and need to be controlled with additional pesticides. As a certified nursery, I am required to comply with both State and Federal regulations, maintain inventory and sales reports and pay taxes. Owners of these rooster farms do not comply with any such regulations, do not report income from sales or gambling and the birds contribute no agricultural benefits to the State of Hawaii. I have nothing against raising chickens for food and having a few roosters to service the hens, but having 50 or 100 roosters tethered to a -frames on an acre or less of land without a single hen is not raising chickens for any other purpose than illegal gambling. The treatment of these birds is cruel and inhumane. The birds and their feces create a personal health risk, attract vermin and pests and diminish property values. The incessant loud crowing all day and all night is beyond a nuisance. It makes it difficult to sleep or even think clearly and has a huge impact on the daily life and peace of all properties surrounding these "farms."
