Hawaii County Code Relating to Rooster Farms

The mission of Hawaii Island. Humane Society is to prevent cruelty to animals, eliminate pet
overpopulation, and enhance the bond between humans and. animals. As you may already know,
established in 1965, the Hawaii Island. Humane Society serves the Hawaii Island community
with shelters in Keaau, Waimea and in Kona.
While we cannot comment on rooster farms in general, it has been the Hawaii Island Humane
Society's mission to prevent cruelty to animals and hence, we have always been in opposition to
raising animals to fight each other. We support the humane treatment of all animals and these
"farms" are creating a public nuisance, health risks and loss of property for their residential
neighbors, as well as the potential for inhumane treatment.
While supportive of overall efforts to identify where and under what conditions rooster farms are
allowed in Hawaii County, we will await further comment until hearing fi-om. the State
Department of Health and the Planning Department on their continents on the bill and fi-om the
community -at -large on the required borders from any property line as drafted in Bill No, 1.12.
