Aloha Kakou,
I'd like to thank you for this opportunity to share my testimony.
I was born and raised in Hawai' i. I am a voting resident of Hawai' i County and a beginning farmer. I do not
currently raise roosters myself, however I am writing to you in opposition of Bill 112. -
I believe this bill is a poor attempt to address the wants of a few without considering the needs of the many. Why is
property value and infringement taking precedence over the intended use and actual zoning of agriculture land?
When does one regulation to protect an individual's rights become an infringement on another individual's rights to
do as they see fit on private property (according to current zoning laws of course)? I believe that if people chose to
move to agriculturally zoned areas they should expect agriculture activities, whether they agree with them or not.
The breeding and raising of Gamefowl for preservation and genetic quality is one of those activities. It is a heritage
and part of many native cultures, Kanaka Maoli included. People must understand and expect that there will be
smells, noise, the occasional escaped animals, slow moving fruit and bee hive trucks and all the real day to day
activities that constitutes a rural and agriculturally centered community. If said people disagree with their rural
country surroundings they are free to chose to live elsewhere. This is a small island nation rich in it's own culture,
history and native practices. Great progress has taken place since the illegal annexation of the Hawaiian Kingdom to
right the wrong doings of over -reaching political figures. Let us work in making things right with the greater human
evils we are currently combating on our island; violent crimes, thefts, and child abuse; just to name a few. Please use
our tax monies to create a real impact on issues that truly affect us all.
I humbly request for you our County representatives to oppose Bill #112 and concentrate on the bigger issues at
hand.
