We all support better health care. But could the money allocated by this resolution be put to better use?
Tropicare is not the best way to deliver medical care. It takes a tremendous amount of time, energy, and
money to set up medical services, then turn around and take them all down again after a few days.
Tropicare is no help to people who can't drop everything to come on the planned days.
I don't know if Tropicare does any followup, and I suspect many patients can't afford to follow up with a
local doctor. What happens to patients who have teeth pulled, then have complications?
To get more bang for your buck, consider funding airfare for low-income people to see specialists in
Honolulu.
And consider funding existing low-income health programs that are available more than once a year and
do provide followup.
Military medical people might get better training by assisting ongoing programs—though it would generate
less publicity buzz than Tropicare.
