COUNTY OF HAWAII <br />RESOLUTION NO. .9fi <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br />A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND <br />FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED <br />FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE HAWAII ISLAND PORTUGUESE <br />CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL CENTER FOR THE <br />140th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST PORTUGUESE IMMIGRANT <br />FAMILIES. <br />WHEREAS, the first Portuguese immigrant families to Hawaii traveled from the Madeira <br />Islands, arriving in 1878; and <br />WHEREAS, the first immigrant workers were recruited by the Planters' Society from the <br />Madeira Islands to work mainly as laborers on sugar cane fields, and many brought their wives and <br />children with them; and <br />WHEREAS, this year, 2018, will mark the 140th anniversary of the arrival of the first <br />Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii; and <br />WHEREAS, the Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce Cultural and <br />Educational Center (HIPCCCEC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve as a <br />cultural, research, and educational center for the community and as a resource for people of all ages <br />and backgrounds to learn about the sacrifices and contributions that the Portuguese immigrants made <br />to society; and <br />WHEREAS, the HIPCCCEC is planning several cultural and educational events that will take <br />place in September throughout Hawaii Island; and <br />WHEREAS, the HIPCCCEC has requested funds to purchase educational materials, flyers <br />for public outreach and information, brochures, and other miscellaneous items for the planning and <br />implementation of these events; and <br />WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports programs that facilitate <br />the sustainability of Hawaii Island communities through community based collaboration; and <br />WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, Contingency <br />Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying <br />the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, <br />materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br />Contingency Relief funds from Council District 2 will be appropriated to the Department of Research <br />and Development to provide a grant to the Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce <br />Cultural and Educational Center to assist with the 140th anniversary of the arrival of the first <br />Portuguese immigrant families. <br />
