•;�tYosy,-'J, <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII %.. - STATE OF HAWAII <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 566 8 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND <br /> FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED <br /> FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO ASSIST THE <br /> HAWAII PAPAYA INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION WITH ITS FERAL PIG TRAPPING <br /> PROGRAM. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) local environmental nonprofit whose purpose is <br /> to assure critical habitat for native species and open space for future generations; and <br /> WHEREAS,the Hawai`i Papaya Industry Association (HPIA), whose members are papaya <br /> producers, exists to promote the improvement of business conditions in the State of Hawai`i for the <br /> papaya industry; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna, a founding member of Big Island Invasive Species <br /> Committee, supports efforts to eradicate invasive species and promote agricultural sustainability in <br /> Puna and will be working with HPIA on purchasing materials and assembling pig traps; and <br /> WHEREAS, HPIA is dedicated to growing delicious, nutritious, high-quality, papayas for <br /> consumers around the world; striving to improve business conditions for the papaya industry in <br /> Hawai`i, including those related to the cultivation, distribution, sales, and use of papayas; and <br /> developing and improving the papaya industry through research, education, and cooperation on a <br /> non-partisan basis; and <br /> WHEREAS, many HPIA members are experiencing crop loss and field damage caused by <br /> invasive feral pigs, which substantially impacts their ability to remain economically viable; and <br /> WHEREAS, HPIA has determined that trapping is the most desirable way to address the <br /> problem, as it provides a legal, safe method to dispose of feral pigs; and <br /> WHEREAS,HPIA is requesting funds to purchase materials for feral pig traps to assist with <br /> its feral pig trapping program; and <br /> WHEREAS,pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, Contingency <br /> Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying <br /> the nonprofit organization and the specific program,project, event, activity, service, equipment, <br /> materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now,therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 will be appropriated to the Department of Research <br /> and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna to assist with the Hawai`i Papaya Industry <br /> Association feral pig trapping program. <br />
