RESOLUTION NO. 582 1,z;
A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A
DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO KAHUA PA'A MUA,
INC., TO SUPPORT KOHALA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL'S DISCOVERY GARDEN—
FARM TO SCHOOL PROJECT.
WHEREAS, Kahua Pa'a Mua, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission
is to enhance communities through economic, conservation,preservation, social, and educational
programs for youth and adults with a focus on agriculture; and
WHEREAS,Kahua Pa'a Mua, Inc., is partnering with Kohala Elementary School to
expand its Discovery Garden—Farm to School project to teach, in an exploratory manner,
sustainable agricultural practices, STEM content, wellness, nutrition, and Hawaiian values; and
WHEREAS, the Discovery Garden—Farm to School project brings parents and the
community into the development of school menus,partnering with local farms and recruiting
experts to provide education specific to food and nutrition while teaching self-reliance to youth;
and
WHEREAS, Kahua Pa'a Mua, Inc., is requesting funds for picnic tables, soil, seeds,
mason jars, kitchen kits, and other gardening and cooking supplies to expand the Discovery
Garden—Farm to School project; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports programs that
facilitate the retention, expansion, and innovation of Hawai`i's agricultural sector, food systems,
and food security in our island community; and
WHEREAS,pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code,
Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via
resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity,
service, equipment,materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
Contingency Relief funds from Council District 9 will be appropriated to the Department of
Research and Development to provide a grant to Kahua Pa'a Mua, Inc., to support Kohala
Elementary School's Discovery Garden—Farm to School project.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby
transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Director of Research and Development and Director of Finance, and that the
Director of Finance is hereby authorized to make the necessary transfers in accordance with the
terms of this resolution.
