Opposition to proposed bill # 112 A'
I offer this testimony in memory of Asao Kadosaki of Skill Village, Pa'ia, Maui.
My name is Katharine T. Cannon-Eger. I am a resident of Hawaiian Paradise Park where my husband and I
have owned a home since 1989. I am an agricultural enthusiast. For ten years, I wrote a column on the financial
impact of various aspects of agriculture in Hawaii County for the local economic development board.
Prior to living in Hawaii County, my husband and I lived in UpCountry Maui where we farmed avocados,
herbs, and edible flowers as well as geese, ducks,turkeys, peacocks, and chickens. We became acquainted with
and, as time went on, good friends with the late Asao Kadosaki of Skill Village in Paia. He introduced us to the
world of game fowl. Mr. Kadosaki put his four daughters through college on his game fowl money. It was from
him we learned about McRae dark, Kelso, Bishop Grey, and other thoroughbred bloodlines. He taught us about
different "keeps" —mixes of grain, herbs, fruit, and other natural ingredients for feed. He taught us about bird
health and handling. Caring for roosters and hens carried him through the grieving time after his wife passed
away. The level of care and concern he had for his birds was echoed in all of his students.
That's long ago and far away, but the lessons I learned there bring me to comment here on the proposed Bill
112, relating to rooster farms.
To me,preserving these bloodlines is somewhat akin to preserving heritage seeds. The activity belongs in an
agricultural area, which Hawaiian Paradise Park happens to be. I realize that this bill if passed would impact all
of Hawaii County, not just the Puna District.
There are many agricultural activities that are not food crops: timber, fiber, biofuel, flowers, and nursery plants
are a few examples.
I am in favor of continuing agricultural uses on agriculturally zoned lands in Hawaii County.
