An Ordinance Amending Chapter 25 Relating to Rooster Farms
I would like to voice my opposition to your proposed amendments.
You state that"most rooster farms exist for the sole purpose of breeding and raising roosters for cock-fighting--an
activity that is illegal in all fifty states".
You make this statement as if it were a fact. In reality it is just your opinion. Many law abiding persons raise roosters
and not just to fight them.You may be surprised to hear the other reasons why people raise roosters. Have you talked
to them prior to introducing your Proposal, or did you only listen to one side of the issue? The A and 1A districts are AG
land.The people who bought these properties bought them knowing that they could farm,grow produce/crops, and
raise animals--which included roosters. These uses were all permitted in these districts and that's why people choose
to buy their home property is this area/district.
You further state that"Because raising roosters is a noisy and smelly endeavor". Yes roosters crow, dogs bark, pigs
grunt/'oink', as well as all the other livestock and the 'noise'that they make. To some that may be noise,to others it's
just the sounds of being/living in the country. Living in an agricultural district. Can you really state that the roosters
'smelly endeavor' is any worse or better than that of raising horses, pigs,or any other livestock production?You can't
just single them out like that. If you didn't want to hear these noises or smell these smells then you should not have
bought property in these agricultural districts,where it is allowable. I know of people that lived in the city all their lives
and thought they would never be able to live in the country with the roosters crowing, but now they don't even hear
them.
And then you state that"rooster farms can have a detrimental effect on the occupants and land values of surrounding
properties". Again this is your opinion, as they can also have favorable and positive effects on occupants. Land values
could increase as other potential property owners would also be very interested in raising their livestock and/or rooster
farms,just like their neighbors.
Although I do not live in your district,your proposals can spread and would then be detrimental to others. Appreciate
you taking the time to read this.
