Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit, to which was referred Communication No. 832,
reports as follows:
Communication 832,transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated March 21, 2018, nominates
Gregory Charles Henkel of Council District 5 to the Fire Commission. Mr. Henkel has been employed
at Connections Public Charter School and Hawai`i Academy of Arts and Science. He attended
Appalachian State University and graduated with Essential Medical Training for Army Aviators in 1971.
Mr. Henkel was a Chairperson of the Windward Planning Commission. In addition, Mr. Henkel's
community services included being a member of the Fire Commission from 2010 through 2013 and
being a member of the Puna Canoe Club.
Mr. Henkel indicates that he is not affiliated with any political party. If confirmed,he willserve a full
term that expires December 31, 2022. Mr. Henkel was in the Hilo Chamber and was told he did not have
to appear at the next Council meeting for confirmation of his appointment.
Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Communication No. 832, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Gregory Charles Henkel
to the Fire Commission.
