REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON FINANCE DATE: April 10, 2018 Re: Comm. No. 836 PLACE: Council Chambers Hilo, Hawai`i TIME: 10:49 a.m. Council Chair and Members Hawai`i County Council Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 836, reports as follows: Communication No. 836, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim dated March 21, 2018, nominates Nelson H. Harano to the Hawai`i County Tax Board of Review. Ms. Rose Bautista, Executive Assistant to Mayor Kim, introduced Nelson H. Harano. Mr. Harano's experience as a tax manager for Aloha Business Services, Inc., and past work as an accountant/small business owner makes him uniquely qualified for the Tax Board of Review. He was recently confirmed for reappointment to the Salary Commission at which time the Council spoke favorably for his reappointment. Mr. Harano stated that it would be an honor to serve on the Tax Board of Review. Council Members expressed support of Mr. Harano's appointment to the commission. If confirmed, he will serve to fill a term expiring December 31, 2022. Chair David informed Mr. Harano that he did not need to appear at the next Council meeting for confirmation of his appointment. Pursuant to Section 19-96 of the Hawai`i County Code, there shall be a Tax Board of Review, which shall consist of nine members appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Council. Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication No. 836, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Nelson H.
